2004 7.30 NEWS REPORT
Broadcast 29/03/04

Reporter: Peter Wilkins

KERRY O'BRIEN: Peter McCutcheon reporting.
Now for some good sporting news.
Last year, Australian golfer Adam Scott revealed, on this program, his plan to become the best golfer in the world.
Well, this morning our time, the 23-year-old took a giant step to realising that precocious ambition -- winning the richest event on the PGA tour -- the Players Championship.
Scott became the youngest winner of the tournament, regarded by players as golf's fifth 'major' and had a special thanks for fellow Queenslander Greg Norman who he's set to replace as the flag bearer for Australian golf internationally.
Peter Wilkins reports.

PETER WILKINS: Adam Scott has an icy calm demeanour and a spectacularly efficient game.

COMMENTATOR: Very hard to judge how quickly this ball is going to come out, but that was executed perfectly.
COMMENTATOR 2: You could stand there all day and not hit that good a shot again.
COMMENTATOR: Just remarkable.

PETER WILKINS: The Players' Championship engraver might have been forgiven for getting an early start on the trophy with the young Australian with already one PGA title in the bag, safely in the middle of the 18th fairway with a 2-shot lead.
Adam Scott has been building to this point and might have revealed a touch earlier than this expectation he revealed on the 7:30 Report 16 months ago.
At the very least, he's on target.

ADAM SCOTT: I feel that in three years time, I could be reaching world number one standard. That's kind of how I look at it.
By the time I'm 25 I will have been on tour six years, so I've got a lot of experience. I've played a lot of golf up against the best players in the world.
So if I've been doing the right things and working hard I should be able to peak by then.

PETER WILKINS: Adam Scott cited the mental strength of Tiger Woods as the elusive X-factor he needed.

ADAM SCOTT: The bit that I really see that I envied that Tiger Woods has, is his mental toughness and his belief in his own abilities.
I don't know if it's natural or maybe you can work at it.
But I've got to find it somehow.

PETER WILKINS: Mental toughness overflowed today after the safety of the 18th fairway became his and the engraver's potential watery nightmare.
Scott steeled himself with a chip --

COMMENTATOR: Coming up and over that rise.

PETER WILKINS: ..and a putt to win.

COMMENTATOR: He's got it!

PETER WILKINS: And while not yet world number one, he's one step closer according to mentor and confidante Greg Norman.

GREG NORMAN: I'm proud of him as an Australian, but I'm proud of him as a golfer as well. He's going to be the next superstar.

ADAM SCOTT: I've had some really great things happen to me this week. Greg Norman, my hero as a kid, spending some time with me. He won it 10 years ago. This means a lot to me. Courtesy of ASAP Sports
